Response to the UCL Evaluation report on Summary Care Records
Responding to this report, A Department of Health spokesperson said:
'We welcome the evaluation report from UCL and will consider its findings.
'Broadly our view is that we see a need for both patients and clinicians to be able to access patient records in an electronic form.  This is part of our thinking about making information transparent and available, while involving patients in decisions about their healthcare.' 
 
UCL researchers publish Summary Care Record (SCR) evaluation
A UCL (University College London) research team, led by London GP Professor Trisha Greenhalgh, has published its independent evaluation of the first year of the Summary Care Record (SCR) programme. The team found that although the SCR offers real benefits for treating patients in emergency and unscheduled care settings, the '”complicated” technical system needs to be refined before being rolled out. Nevertheless, both NHS staff and patients were largely positive or amenable to the programme, with most people valuing the benefits of instant access to medical records over the small risk of data loss or breach.
 
A renewed commitment to help children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions was made today by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.
Up to £30 million is being made available for this year to help children's hospices, networks and other providers develop local children's palliative care projects. NHS to cut management costs
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:'NHS spending will increase, but so too will the demand on NHS services.  In order to meet this demand, the NHS needs to make substantial savings and that is why I want to see immediate action this year to reduce management costs so that the savings made can be reinvested in NHS care for patients.
